Body & home / Measure at wash time

A simpler laundry day.

One plain soap. A sensible amount. No giant mystery bucket to store. Start here if you want to explore a simpler wash, then pay attention to your water and machine.

Amounts for one load

Let’s make it

One thing at a time

Here’s how.

  1. Check the washing-machine manual and clothing labels first. Use the lower amount of soap for a lighter load.
  2. Put the soap in the wash as the machine’s instructions permit. If using baking soda, add it to the wash separately.
  3. If using vinegar, add it only through a separate rinse permitted by the machine maker. Never combine it with the soap or chlorine bleach.
  4. Run the appropriate cycle and check that the clothing rinses clean. Reduce soap or choose a laundry detergent if you notice residue, especially in hard water.

A little more than the ingredients

Why it belongs in the house.

An unscented wash can simplify your fragrance choices. Measuring each load also makes it easier to avoid using more soap than the clothes need.

Castile soap is soap, not modern laundry detergent. Hard water can leave deposits, and some machines require specific detergents. A good household recipe should fit your water and washer rather than make extra work for them.
